The Arsenal Team of the Decade (1997-2007)

When Arsene Wenger took over Arsenal Football Club in October 2006, he was relatively unknown in the English football community. Since his arrival, however, Wenger has transformed Arsenal into a successful, multi-national side with a strong emphasis on stylish, attacking football.

As a passionate supporter of Arsenal in the last ten years I have had the privilege to witness Wenger entire tenure as manager of the club. During this time I have seen win the Premier ClubLeague title three times (1998, 2002 & 2004), the FA Cup four times (1998, 2002, 2003 & 2005), reaching both the UEFA Cup final and Champions League final once each (2000 & 2006 respectively). I have many great players come and go, from the Association from all over the world and pampered by some scintillating attacking football.

So without further ado, I am pleased to present to play in 4-4-2 formation favored Wenger, the Arsenal team of the decade.

Keeper of theDecade: Jens Lehmann

German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann Arsenal in July 2003 as a replacement for longtime Englishman David Seaman. While many supporters will no doubt Lehmann-choice question on this page about his predecessor, I believe that it is difficult, with outstanding performances for Arsenal Lehmann to argue. In his first season with the club Lehmann went the entire Premiership season without losing a game - a remarkable tribute to his consistency and ability toObjectives.

His next season was less spectacular, but he put in a significant man-of-the-match performance in the Arsenal FA Cup Final win bitter rivals Manchester United. Lehmann joined another level in the 2005/06 season, when will sent off throughout his Champions League with Arsenal and unbeaten in the last, unfortunately. He was subsequently awarded the Champions League Goalkeeper of the Year.

An amazing save from Real MadridRaul in the quarter-final second leg and an important late save from Juan Riquelme in the penalty-kick in the semi-final second leg against Villareal were the highlights of his campaign. Lehmann has always been a shot-stopper, and despite a tendency to heated earned his place as Arsenal goalkeeper of the decade.

Best Moment: With Arsenal 1-0 against Villareal on aggregate and on the brink of their first Champions League final was their opponentsRiquelme penalty kick to give the opportunity to tie into extra-time to send. But increasingly Jens Lehmann dived to his left and from Riquelme penalty to delirium in the Arsenal camp sparks and put them up to their first Champions League final run.

Right Back of the Decade: Lauren

Cameroon midfielder Lauren Arsenal from Real Mallorca in 2000 and became the first-choice Arsenal again implemented for the 2001/02 season. He was an integral partArsenal defense that won the double in that season to defend and attack, and equally adept at forming an important partnership with Freddie Ljungberg down the right flank.

Lauren was an incredibly talented player with exceptional technical skills. He combined to make this technique with great speed and aggression, the ideal attacking right-back too. He was a member of the unbeaten Arsenal side that went through the Premiership season in 2003-2004, but was suspended for four games forRuud van Nistelrooy missed faced after a penalty on the striker of Manchester United against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

In spite of leaving the club and for accession in January 2007 Lauren will be among the best wing backs Arsenal's all time and his place as Arsenal right-back in the decade.

Best Moment: With six games locked in 2001/02 Arsenal go in a tight battle with Manchester United for the Premiership title. TheGunners meet London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a crucial game, which was prepared at 1-1 late in the second half. When Thierry Henry a penalty for Arsenal won in the 85th Minute was it - Surpisingly - Lauren, which is responsible for the kick. With all the confidence in the world that he put his sentence in the middle of the goal to seal a decisive victory for the club and put them on their way to the Premier League title.

Central Defender Of The Decade: Tony Adams (Captain)

Itis impossible to leave the man with the nickname "Mr. Arsenal" from this page. Although previously suffered from alcoholism in the 1990s, Tony Adams has been revitalized by the arrival of Arsene Wenger and the implementation of the reform of the association of food practices and went to the captain of the club to two league and cup doubles in 1997/98 and 2001 / 02.

Adams was the last English central defender, tall, strong and excellent in the air. He excelled in organizing the defense, but wasa wild man-marker. Adams is the most successful captain in the history of the club and is the only English football player to captain a League-winning team in three different decades.

As such, Adams not only makes it into the Arsenal team of the decade as a central defender, but also handed the captain's armband as a tribute to his leadership and loyalty to the Arsenal Football Club about his eighteen-year career.

Best Moment: Tony Adams cappedArsenal and his extraordinary 1997/98 Premiership campaign with the ultimate goal of the season. Collected as a central defensive partner Steve Bould the ball halfway Adams pulled a view to the target and Bould chipped the ball into the path. With only the goalkeeper to beat he struck the ball past the Everton goalkeeper to round brilliant arsenal season.

Central Defender Of The Decade: Kolo Toure

Arsene Wenger signed Kolo Toure from Ivory Coast club ASECMimosas for the small sum of 150,000 in 2002 and made him a superstar. Originally conceived as a program midfield player who was converted to central defense Wenger, Toure and formed a strong partnership with Sol Campbell saw the club go undefeated in the Premier League in season 2003/04.

Toure success in switching to central defense is even more remarkable, attributed by some kind of play more of a winger. His breathtaking speed, natural agility and strength on theBall has provided more than enough compensation for his short height of 1.83 meters to the test. Like Adams, Toure is a natural leader on the court and has as a favorite of the fans at Arsenal. He was part of the Arsenal defense, which went 10 games without conceding a goal in the Champions League and continue to be touted as a future captain of the club.

While many supporters believe that Sol Campbell should be the second center back position in this team I think Toure pips him because of his superiorTechnique on the ball. As such, Toure partner Tony Adams as the second defender in the Arsenal team of the decade.

Best Moment: Arsenal played Villareal in the park in the first half of the Champions League semi-final first leg at Highbury, but could not find the goal their play deserved. But right at the death of half cracked Toure to home Alexander Hleb cross, turn and score his first Champions League goal. It turns outthe deciding goal in the band, the rescue ended 1-0 to Arsenal after a 0-0 draw in the return game made famous by a penalty Jens Lehmann.

Left Back of the Decade: Ashley Cole

It pains me to say it after his recent infidelity to the club, but Ashley Cole is the position of the left-back in the Arsenal team of the decade prior to Nigel Winterburn and Silvinho. While the club was an integral part of the Cole attack Arsenal Double-winning side 2001/02 and2003/04.

Always ready to get on and support with its heady pace, Cole is blessed with excellent technical skills and is a solid crosser of the ball. He is an excellent tackler and is often in the game against Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo dominating a credit to his man-marking ability.

It is a shame that ended Cole's career at Arsenal, as it did, and he will always be remembered that, instead of his fabulous achievements, which he gave inHe spent seven years with the club. For these consistent performances and Cole gets a place in the team, as the left-back in the decade.

Best Moment: Cole performance against Manchester United when marking Cristiano Ronaldo in the FA Cup in 2005 was one of the best in his Arsenal career. He dashed allow Ronaldo's dribbling over and over again, clinging to a 0-0 draw at Arsenal until the end of the extension. Then, calmly converted a penalty shoot-Colehis penalty as Arsenal went on to win the trophy for the third time in four years.

Right Midfielder of the Decade: Fredrik Ljungberg

Fredrik Ljungberg joined Arsenal in 1998 for 3 million pounds from the Swedish side Halmstads BK, following an outstanding performance for his national team against England in a World Cup qualifying match. Wenger has played a significant risk in signing the player live without him, but his faith was rewarded in part when LjungbergScored on debut as a substitute in the 3:0-victory over Manchester United.

He finished the 2000/01 season in top form with a run of scoring goals against Arsenal in the FA Cup Final loss to Liverpool in Cardiff. Ljungberg has become the best run of form for the club a year later 2001/02 in the final laps of the season, where he was charged in five consecutive games prior to the issue of support for Sylvain Wiltord to complete the title for Arsenal at Old Trafford. He scored a superb solo goalagainst Chelsea in the FA Cup Final and became the first player in two successive FA Cup finals for 50 years.

Ljungberg's definition has always been his speed, stamina and the ability too late to make surging runs into the box to create opportunities for scoring chances. Few are able to do so, and Ljungberg, and as such he is the right position in the midfield, the Arsenal team of the decade.

Best Moment: In the last few games the 2001/02Premiership-winning years Ljungberg scored important goals in an almost ridiculously consistent basis. But it was one of its goals after the start of the season against Liverpool at Anfield, Arsenal win the title is defined on this page. With Arsenal down to ten men after the harsh dismissal of Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side were really good, and against them. But Ljungberg went on to win the game by first opening a punishment for Thierry Henry to decide the points before the fire in the sealing for anice piece from Robert Pires tricks. The goal and Ljungberg celebration remains a personal favorite memory of me and define the features of the battles 2001/02 Arsenal side.

Central Midfielder of the Decade: Patrick Vieira (Vice Captain)

Arsene Wenger, the purchase of the Senegalese-born French international from AC Milan in September 1996 for EUR 3.5 million is widely regarded as one of his best pieces of transfer business. After joining the club, WengerVieira together and developed into a technically proficient midfielder compliment his endless stamina and physical strength.

Vieira, a habit of scoring a series of long-term goals early in his time at Arsenal but was more and more defensive as his career progressed. Its defensive nature provides stability for the defense and made the happy move to the front of Cole and Lauren and Ljungberg and Pires in the attacks. However, Vieira still a talent of jumpingup in the big matches and slotting home a goal or two.

He was captain of the Arsenal sides that won the double in 2001-2002 and went into the Premier League in 2003-2004 before winning the FA Cup Final 2005 with the last kick for the club before the Italian side Juventus unbeaten. He remains a true Arsenal legend and there can be no argument about the place Vieira in the team of the decade as a leading central midfielder.

Best Moment: It was a fitting end to hisArsenal career, when Patrick Vieira in line to take the fifth and final kick against Manchester United in 2005 and reached the FA Cup win for the club. Vieira had won a lot of great moments, but captain of Arsenal for the trophy with his last kick for the club, was a fairytale end to an outstanding career.

Central Midfielder of the Decade: Gilberto Silva

The Brazilian midfielder Arsenal for 4.5 million pounds in August 2002 following outstandingBenefits for his country at the World Cup in Korea and Japan. He brought a reputation for simple, effective football - which is not normally due to a Brazilian players - and his privileged position as a holding midfielder who sits in front of the defense.

Gilberto made an immediate mark in his first game for Arsenal, scored the decisive goal in the 2002 Community Shield against Liverpool. His first season with the club was on with mixed reviews and a sawTendency for him invisible frustrated during the game trailer. But in his second season, all the frustrations disappeared. He was a skillful and physical coupling with the central club captain Patrick Vieira and Arsenal unbeaten half of the entire Premier League season.

Gilberto was a key member of the starting lineup and was vice-captain Vieira after his departure from the association. He was widely regarded as the best player of the club in the 2006/07 season, which broughtthe best out Gilberto as a bandleader and scorer. His versatility and quiet consistency of his time at Arsenal's Gilberto is the perfect partner for central midfielder Patrick Vieira in the team of the decade.

Best Moment: Though a penalty, the tension of the Arsenal captain for the first time at a 1:0-victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford for a long time missed in the memory of Gilberto live. He was a commander, dominant presence in midfieldand let the clever Cesc Fabregas the freedom, the Manchester United defense problems. If ever a game that signaled Gilberto transition from team player team leader so it was.

Left Midfielder of the Decade: Robert Pires

The French dynamo Arsenal from Marseille in 2000 for 6 million pounds sterling, and left the club for Spanish side Villareal six years later in the summer of 2006. The impact that Robert Pires had on the success ofArsenal between these two dates was remarkable. Pires scored 62 Goals and 43 assists in 189 Premiership appearances planned to make his mark as a player of astonishing effectiveness.

Pires two peaks of the form as an Arsenal player came in the 2001-02 season, when he was voted PFA Player of the season after dominating the midfield for Arsenal, and the 2003/04 season where he scored 14 goals in the Clubbing Help unbeaten in the Premier League for an entire season. Pires greatest attributeswere his flawless control, blistering pace and technical creativity. Importantly, he also adept at scoring beautiful or ugly goals at crucial moments for the club.

He formed a formidable attacking relationship with the likes of Fredrik Ljungberg, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry and is an obvious choice, as the Left Midfielder of the Decade for Arsenal.

Best Moment: The pinnacle of career Pires Arsenal "came in his second season at the club, as hevoted PFA Player of the Year despite missing the last two months of the season with a knee injury. His finest moment this season came in a game against Aston Villa, where an unprecedented Pires each goal, a 2:0-seal victory achieved. Receiving a long ball from Ljungberg, Pires flicked the ball over his head, George Boateng Aston Villa defender before chipping Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeicel. It was a moment of pure class from a class player.

Storm of the Decade: ThierryHenry

Signed at Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Thierry Henry from Juventus in August 1999 for 10.5 million pounds was being seen by most observers, a strange decision. Following a performance in Italy, Henry was mainly used on the wing and scored only three goals in 16 international matches for Juventus - usually struggle with the defensive discipline in the Serie A. After arriving at Arsenal, he was immediately in a forward adapted from Wenger, and since that day the club and Henry neverlooked back. Although he did not score in the first ten games with Arsenal, Henry completed his first season with 26 and a star was born.

Henry is now the highest scorer in Arsenal history with 174 goals from 254 games. But his performances have always been achieved through so much more than just gates. He is an amazing athlete, one of the quickest players with the ball at his feet in the history of the game and has a wealth of ideas and imagination, has thrilled the football world.Highlights include his amazing self-made volley against Manchester United, his hat-trick away to Roma in the Champions League, running a stunning individual goal at home to London rivals Tottenham and a late header last season's Premiership match at home to Manchester United win.

There are no words to distinguish the effect that has had on the success of Thierry Henry from Arsenal, since he can describe, signed in 1999. His promotion to captain, according to Patrick VieiraDeparture was a reward for his loyalty and influence within the club and a sign of great respect that his colleagues and the Arsenal community itself to have. As such, Henry makes him not only in the team of the decade, but also as an Arsenal player of the decade.

Best moment: confronted in the middle of the historic 2003/04 season, Liverpool Arsenal at Highbury, after they knocked out both the Champions League and FA Cup games in a row. ThePerformance which Henry produced on that day was truly amazing how he single-handedly turned a 2-1 deficit into a stunning mid-4:2-Sieg. Grab his second goal of the game - the leadership for Arsenal for the first time - was one of his best ever for the club. After dribbling past three Liverpool defenders halfway he coolly slotted past Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek to Arsenal Premiership season back on track.

Storm of the Decade: DennisBergkamp

Dennis Bergkamp signed for Arsenal for the June 1995 for £ 7.5million after two disappointing seasons with Inter Milan in Serie A. The Dutchman hit his best form after the arrival of Arsene Wenger in 1996 and was voted as the PFA Player of the Year season 1997/98 when Arsenal won the doubles championship and trophy. Bergkamp the best features were always his impeccable control and intelligence when, on the ball. He'd set was hardly a breath of waste and also in a position toa teammate for a goal with a brilliant pass or flick knives, as he quit the opportunities for themselves.

The quality of the goals, scored the Bergkamp is something to cherish as an Arsenal supporter. This is best done in a 3:3-draw shows at Leicester City, where Bergkamp scored a hat-trick of such brilliance that his three goals took all three points in the Premier League goal of the month "- the first and only time a single - Player has achieved this goal. It was also a goal that he monumentalachieved against Newcastle, where he bamboozled his marker to score the goal of the season in 2002. Gates were less frequent than the course of his career, but until his retirement at the end of the 2005/06 season, Bergkamp was a valuable member of the team of Wenger.

Dennis Bergkamp will always remain as a great team player and one of the most influential Arsenal players in the history of the association in memory. Thierry Henry has called him the "perfect" because of his strike partnerSelflessness and ability to read the game. This selflessness is demonstrated by the fact that, in addition, he scored 121 goals for Arsenal also has 166 assists for the club. This makes him the ideal partner for Henry in the Arsenal team of the decade.

Best Moment: The 2:0-victory that included Arsenal away to Newcastle in the Premier League 2001-2002 season will be forever remembered by Bergkamp amazing piece of skill in opening out the scoring for the Gunners. There are suspicions about whether his touch was deliberate, but flicked the ball past Newcastle defender Nicos Dabizas and slotting it past Shay Given credited with one of the best goals scored in the history of the game.
